Talking Creating a Single Layered Leopard install DVD!

1. Open the "osx-leopard105.dmg" (Original Leopard image 6.66 gb) with Disk Utility

2. Goto File -> New -> Blank Disk Image....

3. Set the size to Double Layered DVD DL (8.0 GB DVD+R DL be sure you have enough space on your Disk), Encryption: "None", Format: sparse disk image. Save it as Leopard.

4. The empty Image will be mounted with the name Leopard.sparseimage

5. In Disk Utility click on Leopard.spareimage select Restore. Drop the orginal Leopard Image in Source and drop the Leopard.spareimage in Destination. This will take a while drink a tea or something

6. Now open the restored spareimage. Goto "Optional Installs" and drag the "Xcode Tools" in your trash can.

6a. In finder Select Go -> Goto Folder -> /Volumes/"your Leopard.sparseimage mount point"/System/ there goto Installation -> Packages and Delete everything you don't need. Here is a List:

BE SURE NOT TO DELETE YOUR OWN PRINTER DRIVERS OR LANGUAGE ! So if you have an HP Printer and you use the German language don't remove HewlettPackardPrinterDrivers.pkg and German.pkg!!

Code:
BrazilianPortuguese.pkg
BrotherPrinterDrivers.pkg
CanonPrinterDrivers.pkg
Danish.pkg
Dutch.pkg
EpsonPrinterDrivers.pkg
French.pkg
FujiXeroxPrinterDrivers.pkg
German.pkg
GutenprintPrinterDrivers.pkg
HewlettPackardPrinterDrivers.pkg
Italian.pkg
Japanese.pkg
Korean.pkg
LexmarkPrinterDrivers.pkg
Norwegian.pkg
Polish.pkg
RicohPrinterDrivers.pkg
Russian.pkg
SamsungPrinterDrivers.pkg
SimplifiedChinese.pkg
Spanish.pkg
Swedish.pkg
TraditionalChinese.pkg
XeroxPrinterDrivers.pkg
7. Now again goto to Disk U. File -> New -> Blank Disk Image.... LeopardBoot, Size DVD R (4.7 gb) and Format: read/write Disk Image this will take a while. You can go to the toilet :P.

8. Now the final ^^!!! unmount all images that you can unmount, Otherwise it won't work !!!!. In Disk U. click on the LeopardBoot Image (if not there just drag and drop in disk util) then Restore. As source you drop your Leopard.sparseimage and destination Leopard Boot. Before you click restore again make sure everything is unmounted!!!!

9.Burn the LeopardBoot image to an DVD!!

10.Shutdown your Mac with the burned DVD in it.

11.Now push down the ALT Key and keep it down. Boot your Mac.

12.A Pink Screen will appear. Wait till you have a normal mouse. At the right there will be your LeopardBoot Image if you have done everything right !

13.Be sure you skip the dvd check during installation.

14.Be sure you don't select a language or printer Driver which is not on the dvd ^^.

15.Have fun with the new Leopard !

Big thanks to macdonglecrack@yahoo.com.ph for making these guide.

Whilst this *may* have stemmed from the methods used by pirates, this definitely is a legit hack. Not everyone needs the Developer Tools and that eats up a lot of space as well. In addition, the bundled drivers for printers and other languages also eat up a lot of space.

This is a way to reduce YOUR Leopard installer to a single layer DVD, which is 1/4 to 1/3 the cost of the dual layer disk.

If you give it away or sell it, yes its piracy, but if its for your own use as a backup or as the main installer (keeping the original in a safe place), its not.

I guess I was clear on saying that my dvd drive kept on ejecting the dual-layered Leopard disk (since my dvd rom cannot read dual-layered disks), thus, the need for this. Don't worry, I have no intentions of sharing .

I haven't tried it, but can you burn an exact copy of the Leopard DVD (dual layer). This would be ideal for mac users with DL drives (and probably the only DL disc you'll bother burning anyways) who have bought Leopard and are paranoid about the DVD going bad. I've had CDs and DVDs go bad in the past and I don't think people should be too sure that a Leopard DVD is an exception.

It's either that or Apple replace DVDs damaged by age? Doubt they'd do so.

So do I just fire up Toast for this?

That's me animaster. I made 3 copies of Leopard DL DVD. Toast is good but for those without Toast, Apple Disk Utility is perfect. I used Apple DU.

For those who need step by step tutorial how to make a disk image (.dmg), I took some screenshots.
