REVIEW: Apple Keyboard (Slim Aluminium)

Here's my review of the new, slim Apple Keyboard that the latest iMacs are shipping with.

Starting with the unboxing pics -- well... there's really not much to say. It comes in a box, yeah, and the documentation is sat atop the keyboard.

The first thing you might feel though after opening the box is "Holy... WOW. This thing IS thin!" Yes it is. It's thinner than the aluminium stand that the iMacs have.

Now there's not much else to say about the keyboard except that it's exceptionally nice-and-slim. this isn't like the other Apple keyboards where it's fun to dismantle and then put-back-together. At this point I'm not even thinking about trying to dismantle this thing for fear of warping the keys from their current harmonious positions. Anyways, on with some details:

Keys
More like buttons really. Macbook (and not Macbook PRO) users will feel at home with this. The keys are almost pretty much just like one would find on the consumer-line macbooks. Veteran user's initial impressions are usually something like "How stupid! who would want to type on BUTTONS?" Well.. notebook/laptop users do - everyday. That's something I awkwardly had come to terms with when I asked that same question. I'm a Powerbook user. One thing a user can boast about this keyboard is that it has a heck of a lot more function keys (F keys) than probably any other keyboard on the planet. This keyboard goes up to F19! Aside from one quirk (see the last bit, Whoops! Sorry MacMAME users), the keyboard has a full set of fully-functional keys.

Media Keys
There used to be a ruckus online about the media keys not functioning properly with older mac systems (old as in even the recent 24" intel iMacs included). Well, now they do thanks to yet another Apple Keyboard Software Update. At the time I got my keyboard, the store employee was warning me about the media key issue. However, when I got home, the updated update (yes, I said updated update) was already available, so I had no problems with the media keys not working. I do have some complaints about how Apple chose the keys and their positions in the layout. Why is there only a key for "All-Windows" Exposé? Sure, if you have a Mighty Mouse you squeeze that sucker to get the other functions -- but I already mapped the Mighty Mouse for the same function! So there we have it on the keyboard, that ONE Exposé button. I would have printed the Exposé buttons (all 3 of em) on the F15-F17 keys.

Keyboard Preferences
As long as you've updated to the latest Apple Keyboard Update, you'll have no problems mapping this keyboard (or any other keyboard) to different Finder and Exposé functions. I can even finally map functions to higher F keys! This update has been long overdue however, so there's really no need for celebrations.

USB
The keyboard's USB ports are USB 1 ports, so don't get your hopes too high with connecting your video cameras there.

No More Apple
Veteran mac users will miss the little Apple icon on the command-key, so just hope your oldschool books all have command-x, and not apple-x for keyboard shortcuts :P

Whoops! Sorry MacMAME users
If you used to use those 6 keys above the arrow keys for gaming controls, you're going to be missing out on one key -- the HELP key. It's been replaced by the fn key, which is the same as the fn key on mac notebooks. The fn key allows you to use alternate functions for the F keys when used in conjunction. This makes it possible to hit F2 for a function instead of adjusting the brightness controls on your mac. Anyways, with the fn key there instead of the HELP key (whose function is almost never used for apps anyways), you can no longer map this key for gaming purposes. Big bummer for 2-player games on the same keyboard. Try another area of the keyboard?

Hmmm... USB 1.1 only? This is contrary to what is on their website. Have you actually tried it with USB 2.0 devices? Maybe it was connected to a USB 1.1, hence, the keyboard ports automagically downgraded.

The  on an Apple keyboard is like it's birthmark, making itself known that it's special and not just any other KB, it definitely won't be the same without it anywhere in the KB.

Nice review you got there theanimaster

Nope, it's connected directly to the back of my iMac, and here's the message I get with a 5th gen iPod connected to the keyboard (note system profiler in the background):

Oddly enough I would think that is indeed USB 2 from "Keyboard HUB... speed up to 480Mbps" but then what's that other bit with "Apple Keyboard" that lists only 1.5 Mbps ? Geez, System Profiler can be confusing. From this, it even looks as if my keyboard is plugged into my USB 2 hub. it isn't (and i just made a visual check to be sure). also note i have just one keyboard connected to the mac.

Edit: Just been to the Apple Site myself. If that is indeed supposed to be USB 2, and it's plugged into the back of my iMac in a supposedly also USB 2 port... er.... something doesn't make sense here???

And funny how the product page also says that it's for your iPods to be plugged in, yet I get the above low-power warning.

Should I return my keyboard? Is it defective?

Augh. I'll wait till the keyboards with the Thai script are available first... then I'll pop in the Store and complain. :P

@theanimaster they do have an update for the keyboard, right? Maybe that software update is required.

I have the latest update.

I just read some ghastly revelations on Macfixit.com where they're saying:

-- The USB 2.0 power only works only on the latest aluminium iMacs

and

-- The keyboard in general only works properly only on the latest aluminium iMacs in that it is unresponsive to startup key commands. This would explain why it wasn't ejecting my disc while I was pressing the eject key as my computer started up (I thought I just hit it too late)!!

I really do hope Apple fixes this issue... else I wouldn't feel for them if they have a class-action suit against them for this. Imagine buying a keyboard and not being able to use it to diagnose your mac when you need to!

IMPORTANT EDIT: I just tested keyboard commands at startup. They DO work. My apologies to Apple, and all my doubts go out to macfixit for this spread of misinformation caused by an article from which they've hidden the details in a paid-subscription-only thread. Next time I shoot off my mouth I had better hard-test the results myself.

As for the USB 2.0 functionality, Apple mentions that in a much-overlooked product page. Now if only Apple printed that "little requirement" on the Keyboard's own box or manual? The included manual as well as the online version also fails to mention the additional Exposé controls on the keyboard via command-exposé button and control-exposé button. That is listed in this little-known Apple Knowledge base article.

Unfortunately with the iPod Touch I'm finding more bugs... but I hope they are only due to the fact that I've been appending album art to songs with very little space left on my iPod (so I can imagine it's causing severe fragmentation of the music files and thus leading to problems with playback). This should be fixed with an erase-n-resync of my music (but resyncing on the iPod Touch is a process that gives one nightmares).

One thing i have to say about the aluminum slim keyboard.. It sends "zomgshock" signals when you touch it, which is like 234235346 times on sweaty hands. I work at my desk and walk around the house barefoot on marble flooring. Almost thinking of switching back to the old keyboard. Or just getting a rug. haha. XD.

Got the keyboard from the 24" iMac.

I would get the same with mine. Fortunately I have my iMac grounded.

Although I was thinking "hey mebbe if I connect the grounding wire to the powerstrip, the entire powerstrip and everything plugged into would be grounded, right?

WRONG.

Because whatever $%^&*(^&%Chinese manufacturer spawned this cursed sorry-excuse-for-a-powerstrip didn't factor in GROUNDING CONNECTIONS to the ground prong on the plug in the first place! Idiots! It's so hard to find decent electrical equipment here in Thailand!!!
