Wifi on a Powerbook 1400 ??

Advent Greetings to one and all !!

Well, I finally got a great Powerbook 1400 from eBay booting up OS 9.1, w/an Orinoco WiFi PCI Cardbus (mounted on the upper Cardbus slot) with it's drivers already installed.

I already have an AEBS working with my other Macs and am using myDestiny cable broadband.

Thing is, when I launch the IE browser on it, it cannot seem to connect. I've checked all the usual control panels and have set up the TCP/IP, the Orinoco portion, and the lights on the Orinoco WiFi card all OK, one green LED always steady and the 2nd flashing on sometimes.

I've gone to a website: http://www.penmachine.com/techie/airport1400.html
and the article is:

Wirelessly Networking a PowerBook 1400 or Other Old Apple Laptop: Step By Step
Covering AirPort, Wi-Fi, 802.11b, and WLAN with the PowerBook 5300, 1400, 2400, 3400, 500 Series (520 and 540), 190, and G3 with Mac OS 7.5 through 9.2

I've read through it a couple of times and have followed the steps and the Orinoco drivers are installed, the card's LEDs are working;
I did the usual TCP/IP portion as per the article's suggestions...
I double checked it and even created another WiFi configuration...
I don't think I missed a step, but one portion says this:

NOTE: If you're using a router, gateway, or firewall, most likely you'll have an address of 192.168.1.something (the 192 subnet is what they're supposed to use). If you're hooked straight through your AP to a broadband modem, it will be something else. However, if it's 169.something.something.something, that address is probably internally generated by your PowerBook, and you won't be able to get out onto the Internet. Check that you haven't missed a step somewhere.

Well, in my TCP/IP control panel, the IP address generated is 169.254.159.42
subnet mask is 255.255.0.0 and the router address is the same 169.254.159.42 !!

And that is why I cannot seem to connect to the internet. And I can't seem to get a signal from my AEBS !! In the Orinoco control panel, the status is:
Current Network: -Searching-
Base Station Address: -None-
Signal Strength: Zero, nothing seems to register

Is there anybody still using OS9 and surfing with it ??

Appreciate any help I can get here.

Cheers

hi panic,

It is supposed to be OK, but to be honest, I could not get it to connect. Workarounds were quite difficult and the owner (who is back in SFO) also gave up & just uses it for her school work.

Thing is, as Gonz said, it can go on the net, but (w/the OS9 limited IE5 browser), your surfing experience will not be good.

A good looking old laptop though, keyboard is great, but real old OS9 (just runs it but slow, apparently better to downgrade to lower MacOS).

Cheers

How much time have you spent fiddling with it rather than actually using it?

Greetings "P"

Too much time for a real 'el camote' Mac person !! I really was running out of
ideas... !!!

Luckily, the laptop was not mine and as I said, now, back in SFO, so I'm done
with that. The owner (and in-law relative) is a real MacOS7-8-9 freak and hard
headed, I was urging her to get at least a G3 Pismo or G4 Titanium and OSX
but she insisted that all her school papers and homework were in MacOS7 floppies !!!
Anyway,
Thanks for the invaluable help of Gonz and Rom ! Cheers

So she's that type of user. I steer clear and say I forgot how to use anything but the latest and greatest. Saves me the hassle through and through.

penmanila probably knows how to fix it seeming he has a room full of ancient macs.

And my 'in-law' also did go to U.P. Diliman for a semester or so. I told her to pass by penmanila's office there but do not know if she did.

Sic transit gloria (MacOS9) mundi !! but I will always miss the 'smiling Mac' screen greeting.

MACheers !!
